Feature Pack 3.5 for SAP Business ByDesign is due out at the end of January 2012. With this update, the end-to-end on-demand solution will not only run on the iPhone, iPad, and BlackBerry, but also on Android and Windows smartphones. In Madrid, we got a look at a live demo of the latest version of Business ByDesign on the Windows Phone.

Furthermore, Rainer Zinow, SVP of OnDemand Strategy at SAP, discussed the new features available in FP 3.5. This version offers analytic functions and services, which allow extensive profit analyses to be carried out and more transparency in agreements.

New features for enterprises and subsidiaries

Certain new features should be especially interesting for companies that want to deploy Business ByDesign in their subsidiaries. Business ByDesign FP 3.5 will support these business functions: resource management, order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, payroll impact, and data management.

SAP Business ByDesign is suitable for the following business areas: sales, approvals, expense, and reports and analytics. With FP 3.5, the solution will now be optimized for the iPad. At the moment, there only app for the iPad is the Business ByDesign Dashboard, which lets you look at and work on worksheets. Soon users will get full functionality on their Apple table.

HANA: The Bigger Picture

Sikka discussed SAP HANA in the larger context of SAP and enterprise software. (Photo: Christiane Stagge)

If SAP co-CEO, Jim Snabe, usually delivers his keynote address on the “state-of-SAP”, then SAP Executive Board Member, Vishal Sikka can always be counted on to update the audience on the newest innovations around SAP HANA.

This year, though, Sikka steered clear of a purely technological discussion of HANA. Instead, he put SAP HANA in the context of SAP’s overall technology roadmap and described the role that HANA will play in the future of the enterprise software industry.

Perhaps the decision to talk about SAP HANA in more relative terms was inspired by global current events like the Occupy Wall Street movement in the U.S. and the debt crisis in Greece which Sikka referenced in his keynote. In today’s world, it is impossible to ignore the reality that everything – from the world’s economies to a company’s various software applications and platforms – is inextricably interconnected. HANA does not exist in a vacuum, and in fact, it is only truly useful and powerful when applied to other SAP products.

On that note, on the following pages, we’ll tell you about HANA in the larger context of SAP’s technology strategy:

SAP: “Apple simple, Google fast”

On Wednesday morning, the first day of SAPPHIRE NOW and the second day of TechEd in Madrid, Jim Hagemann Snabe, co-CEO of SAP, took the stage to deliver his keynote address. As in the past, Snabe gave a type of “state-of-the-union” speech, in which he discussed the current position of SAP and its future goals.

Around 10,000 SAP TechEd and SAPPHIRE NOW conference-goers attended the keynote in Madrid, and another 15,000 people tuned in online. If audience members happened to have been present at the first keynote of SAPPHIRE NOW in May, they would have recognized the introductory monologue delivered today by Irish actor Gabriel Byrne. We reported on his dramatic speech last May in our article, “Not Your Grandfather’s SAPPHIRE”, and his introduction once again focused on the future of technology, or rather, how technology will dictate the future.

But the similarities end there. In May, SAP had not yet announced a single application that runs on SAP HANA and was still talking about the SAP Store in hypothetical terms. Today, as Snabe reported, there are several implementation scenarios for SAP HANA now available, and the SAP Store houses over 70 solutions. In short, “SAP has become Apple simple and Google fast,” as one SAP customer said to Snabe.

Keep reading to find out about the other advances SAP has made in the past six months. On the following pages, we’ll cover these topics:

When Vishal Sikka, SAP Executive Board Member, Technology and Innovation, announced SAP In-memory Appliance software, at SAP TechEd last year – when it was still simply called SAP HANA – only a few people could imagine what that would mean for SAP. By the time Hasso Plattner gave his keynote speech at SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando, however, it was clear just how big of an the impact SAP HANA would have on the complete SAP portfolio.

SAP HANA was developed at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany. The software, combined with the necessary hardware, or servers, uses the principle of in-memory technology, in which data is stored in the main memory rather than in disk or database. With SAP HANA therefore, data can be accessed much more quickly than before, enabling data analysis in seconds – basically in real time.

On the first day of TechEd Madrid, it was not only the line to check-in at the conference when the doors opened at 8 a.m. which seemed endless. All sessions to do with SAP HANA also drew massive crowds. The lecture on “Roadmap for SAP HANA” was attended by well over 50 people. If you didn’t arrive at least ten minutes in advance, you were guaranteed a spot in the last row, where it was nearly impossible to hear a single word. Those who attended SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando, however, were in luck because a roadmap for SAP HANA was presented at the event in May. You can read all about SAP’s plans for the the product in “Roadmap: SAP HANA”.

In contrast to some presentations at the last TechEd, this year the speakers were more concrete. Read on the next page:

For the next three days, Madrid is a mecca for those who want practical, straightforward, must-know information on using SAP on a daily basis. And event speakers didn’t waste any time getting down to business.

One of the first sessions of the morning gave attendees an overview of SAP Enhancement packages (EHPs), sharing the roadmap for upcoming enhancements, explaining the concept behind EHPs, and defining the implementation process.

Announcing EHP 6 for ERP 6.0

On the first day at SAP TechEd Madrid, we got a look at the roadmap for the next wave of EHPs for SAP Business Suite applications. The big news is that EHP 6 for ERP 6.0 will enter ramp-up this week. We’ll let you know as soon as more information becomes available on the specific business functions delivered with this enhancement package.

Also EHP2 for CRM 7.0, SRM 7.0, and SCM 7.0 have entered ramp-up this week.

The current EHPs for SAP applications are:

  • EHP 5 for ERP 6.0

TE Connectivity is the global leader in providing passive electronic components, network solutions, wireless systems, and underwater telecommunication systems. The company develops, produces, and markets products for customers in the automotive, kitchen appliances, and aerospace and defense industries, as well as in telecommunications, computer technology, entertainment electronics, and power engineering.

In Germany, TE Connectivity is represented by the companies Tyco Electronics AMP GmbH (in Bensheim) and Tyco Electronics Raychem GmbH (in Ottobrunn) and has five production sites. The accounting department, located in the town of Darmstadt, suggested implementing a system for processing invoices electronically. Andreas Bergdolt, IT project lead for SAP architecture, technology, and solutions at TE Connectivity explains: “With such a solution, we wanted to streamline internal processes, save unnecessary typing, and cut out potential sources of error in invoice entry and data synchronization.” The product that was chosen is a combined solution from SAP gold partner FIS GmbH, comprising the FCI document reader and the FIS/edc Workflow, which is completely integrated in SAP and which can be used to automatically process and approve invoices and other documents.

Flawless Logistics

SAP has offered L’Oréal a Value Partnership service (image: Fotolia)

As the world leader in cosmetics, L’Oréal is a glamorous brand that is at once synonymous with flawless beauty and a worldly approach to personal care that embraces diversity. And while its products are commonplace in households and local shops the world over, it is no run-of-the-mill business. In 2010 L’Oréal’s sales reached €19.5 billion. Its 23 global brands – spanning the spectrum of personal-care products in skin care, hair care and color, makeup, and fragrances – are distributed in 130 countries.

The Integrated Supply Chain at L’Oréal

Behind L’Oréal’s glamorous products lies a vast and complex supply chain that links marketing and sales on one side and production on the other. A new organization was recently put in place to optimize the supply chain and to reinforce the vision of end-to-end supply chain management. In order to properly manage this change, L’Oréal launched in January 2010 a five-year Integrated Supply Chain Program.

Considering the complexity of such a program, L’Oréal needed the best partners to help them safeguard quality and reduce risks. L’Oréal decided to partner with SAP in this program. “For one thing, we were already using SAP solutions so we just went for the same people we knew,” said Xavier Rodriguez, L’Oréal IT project director. “For another, we wanted to communicate to our stakeholders that we are in good hands.”

This past week, most tech web sites and blogs have been captivated by all things Siri – what happens if you ask her about the meaning the life; and somewhat less high-minded, does she swear? Well, at SAP.info, we have been preoccupied with another technology, which coincidentally is also called by a 4-letter-long female name. You guessed it: HANA.

Since SAPPHIRE NOW in May, SAP has been making steady progress along its roadmap for SAP In-Memory Appliance (SAP HANA) software. The in-memory computing technology became generally available as planned at the end of June, and with the announcement in September of two new real-time applications, SAP took the first step toward its stated goal of enabling new and existing applications to run on SAP HANA.

Previewed at SAP TechEd in Las Vegas, SAP Smart Meter Analytics and SAP CO-PA Accelerator Software were developed specifically to take advantage the SAP HANA platform to deliver real-time analytics on large volumes of data for utility companies and finance companies, respectively.

Then, at the Annual Congress of the German-speaking SAP User Group in Leipzig last week, SAP co-CEO Jim Snabe confirmed that in the future SAP Business One will run on SAP HANA. Since over 80% of SAP’s customers are small and medium businesses, this integration plays a vital role in ensuring that all SAP customers – not just large enterprises – will benefit from in-memory technology and real-time analytics. For coverage of the event and more details on the future offering, read the SAP.info article, “In the Pipeline: SAP HANA for SMBs.”
