According to a survey conducted by the German-speaking SAP User Group (DSAG), interest in SAP ERP 6.0 is high: 86% of the respondents reported running an SAP ERP 6.0 system, and 62% were planning to invest in their SAP ERP system in 2012.
The SAP ERP application comprises SAP ERP Financials, SAP ERP Human Capital Management, SAP ERP Operations, and SAP ERP Corporate Services. It also includes a number of components, such as FI (financial accounting), MM (materials management), CO (controlling), SD (sales and distribution), PS (project system), QM (quality management), and LE (logistics).
SAP ERP Human Capital Management covers processes like personnel analysis, employee and process management, and workforce deployment. SAP ERP Operations handles operative processes, including procurement, logistics, product development, manufacturing, sales, and service. Finally, SAP ERP Corporate Services integrates processes in real estate management, enterprise asset management, project and portfolio management, travel management, environmental protection, and occupational health and safety.
To keep SAP ERP up-to-date, SAP offers special enhancement packages (EHPs) that add specific functions to the application. Five EHPs have been released thus far, and the sixth is already in its ramp-up phase.

World land speed records for an unmanned vehicle are already an impressive Mach 8.5. But that accomplishment is little match for the data processing speed of SAP HANA, SAP’s in-memory software. At processing speeds of close to 100GB per second, SAP’s latest in-memory innovations accelerate operational updates for enhanced decision making, giving companies a real competitive edge.
You may wonder just how fast that is in terms of accelerating the speed of reporting in business operations. Ian Kimbell, SAP solution evangelist, puts the power of SAP HANA into perspective by way of practical illustration: “It used to be impractical for a retail company to get real-time information on how a particular promotion was working, as the time taken to analyze millions of point of sale records took hours. With SAP HANA, information is available in seconds, allowing for optimum stock allocation and therefore higher profit.”
That’s impressive (visit Experience SAP HANA to learn more). However, the performance of the new SAP HANA technology is almost overshadowed by the ease of deploying it – especially now that SAP has introduced SAP ERP for operational reporting with SAP HANA as an SAP rapid-deployment solution. This new offering hands the keys of that Mach 1 racing machine to CIOs ready to take their businesses to a new supersonic level. It’s simple, practical, and fast.

One of the great ironies in business is that success can also present a unique set of – well – problems. “Can your systems cope with a big increase in demand? Will customer service and satisfaction suffer if workloads suddenly increase? Are you prepared to deal with entry into new markets? These are just a few of the challenges success might force a business to contend with,” says Benno Eberle, SAP senior solution marketing manager.
To help businesses assess their readiness for successful growth, the SAP Solution Marketing team, in conjunction with SAP Business ByDesign reference customer Cloudbridge Consulting, developed the fun, interactive Boost Your Business Challenge online assessment. “The game will show you how your readiness compares with the average in your industry and help you identify the areas of your business that need the most attention,” says Eberle.
The Boost Your Business Challenge takes just a few minutes and is available in both English and German. Once complete, you’ll receive a free, detailed analysis of your performance.
“The game presents you with typical business challenges in the areas of compliance, efficiency, customer satisfaction, and business insight. Of two possible solutions, you decide which delivers the best result for your business,” explains Eberle.
There are more than 30 individual challenges covering all aspects of a typical business: marketing, sales, and service; finance, HR, and admin; project management; procurement; and IT. There are also CEO challenges that focus on the overall view. Players can tailor the analysis to their particular business by weighting each individual challenge to reflect how relevant it is to their business.
At the end of the challenge, results are presented in the form of a readiness scorecard. You can also download a free, more detailed analysis of the performance of your business and how its results compare with the competition.

Individuals are extremely quick to adopt mobile technology. A Google study shows that five years ago only seven percent of users accessed the Internet from their mobile phones and just six percent used mobile apps. Today, 81 percent access the Internet from their mobile phones and 68 percent use apps. This unprecedented rate of technology adoption has left enterprise IT managers grappling to manage integration, services, data security, optimization of enterprise productivity, and a workforce that demands increasing mobility.
The majority of the mobile workforce uses their devices in the hours-per-day range, and many workers use multiple mobile devices. They use their smartphones as a desktop extension to increase productivity and multiply their reach. Mobile workers say the benefits include staying connected on the road; managing and controlling reports on the go; servicing and maintaining customer accounts on the spot; staying unwired within the enterprise campus; capturing data through RFID integration, voice control and image capturing; and using geo data to locate people, things, and businesses.
Supporting a billion smartphones
It’s estimated that by 2013, a billion smartphones will be deployed in the global workforce, each running multiples apps, and many enterprise IT departments are grappling with the task of supporting this number of devices and applications in such a short time.
“All of SAP’s customers realize that mobility is an unstoppable revolution that must be adopted in the enterprise,” said Clemens Suter-Crazzolara, program lead for Mobility SAP Industry Solutions. “This puts considerable strain on companies, as the end-users on all levels request more and richer functionality. Yet, IT departments need to control the risks associated with the oncoming flood of mobile apps as well as numerous device types and operating systems.”

Preview of Business ByDesign FP 3.5: due out early next year. (Photo: Christiane Stagge)
Feature Pack 3.5 for SAP Business ByDesign is due out at the end of January 2012. With this update, the end-to-end on-demand solution will not only run on the iPhone, iPad, and BlackBerry, but also on Android and Windows smartphones. In Madrid, we got a look at a live demo of the latest version of Business ByDesign on the Windows Phone.
Furthermore, Rainer Zinow, SVP of OnDemand Strategy at SAP, discussed the new features available in FP 3.5. This version offers analytic functions and services, which allow extensive profit analyses to be carried out and more transparency in agreements.
New features for enterprises and subsidiaries
Certain new features should be especially interesting for companies that want to deploy Business ByDesign in their subsidiaries. Business ByDesign FP 3.5 will support these business functions: resource management, order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, payroll impact, and data management.
SAP Business ByDesign is suitable for the following business areas: sales, approvals, expense, and reports and analytics. With FP 3.5, the solution will now be optimized for the iPad. At the moment, there only app for the iPad is the Business ByDesign Dashboard, which lets you look at and work on worksheets. Soon users will get full functionality on their Apple table.

The first keynote address for both TechEd and SAPPHIRE NOW attendees. (Photo: Christiane Stagge)
On Wednesday morning, the first day of SAPPHIRE NOW and the second day of TechEd in Madrid, Jim Hagemann Snabe, co-CEO of SAP, took the stage to deliver his keynote address. As in the past, Snabe gave a type of “state-of-the-union” speech, in which he discussed the current position of SAP and its future goals.
Around 10,000 SAP TechEd and SAPPHIRE NOW conference-goers attended the keynote in Madrid, and another 15,000 people tuned in online. If audience members happened to have been present at the first keynote of SAPPHIRE NOW in May, they would have recognized the introductory monologue delivered today by Irish actor Gabriel Byrne. We reported on his dramatic speech last May in our article, “Not Your Grandfather’s SAPPHIRE”, and his introduction once again focused on the future of technology, or rather, how technology will dictate the future.
But the similarities end there. In May, SAP had not yet announced a single application that runs on SAP HANA and was still talking about the SAP Store in hypothetical terms. Today, as Snabe reported, there are several implementation scenarios for SAP HANA now available, and the SAP Store houses over 70 solutions. In short, “SAP has become Apple simple and Google fast,” as one SAP customer said to Snabe.
Keep reading to find out about the other advances SAP has made in the past six months. On the following pages, we’ll cover these topics:

From sales employees who mostly work at offsite locations to managers who rush from one meeting to the next with only a few scattered moments at their desk in between – the workplace is now anywhere and everywhere workers happen to be. With the release of six new mobile apps for HR processes, SAP is enabling employees to carry out essential business tasks from their smartphones and iPads and is making companies more efficient in the process.
All six apps are now generally available. Depending on the app, these solutions are available for the iPad, iPhone, and BlackBerry. All six apps run on the Sybase Unwired Platform (SUP 2.1).
On the following pages you’ll find an overview of the six apps listed below as well as links to see demos of the apps in action:

Bühler, an automotive components manufacturer, has plants worldwide. (photo: Fotolia)
The midsized family-run automotive components manufacturer Bühler Motoren GmbH is realizing its global aspirations by moving into new territory. Supporting its efforts is SAP industry solution it.automotive supplier, with processes running exclusively on SAP.
Gerhard Denk does not like making decisions from the confines of his desk. Whatever country the CIO of Bühler Motoren GmbH happens to be working in, he takes time to step out onto the factory floor and talk to employees. “If you know where the crux of a problem lies, then you can sort it out in good time,” says the experienced manager. “And it is not just about IT. Most of all, it’s about leadership. You need to motivate and get employees on board with this kind of project – taking the time to listen really pays off.”
Presumably, it is precisely this successful combination of expertise, humanity and persuasiveness that allows Denk to easily inspire people. It is thanks to his and his team’s success that the SAP solution was rolled out uniformly at Bühler worldwide. And as a result, each of the 1,600 employees at Bühler’s global sites can now follow the same process in the same software.

Invoice data used to be entered by hand, now it's processed electronically. (image: Fotolia)
TE Connectivity is the global leader in providing passive electronic components, network solutions, wireless systems, and underwater telecommunication systems. The company develops, produces, and markets products for customers in the automotive, kitchen appliances, and aerospace and defense industries, as well as in telecommunications, computer technology, entertainment electronics, and power engineering.
In Germany, TE Connectivity is represented by the companies Tyco Electronics AMP GmbH (in Bensheim) and Tyco Electronics Raychem GmbH (in Ottobrunn) and has five production sites. The accounting department, located in the town of Darmstadt, suggested implementing a system for processing invoices electronically. Andreas Bergdolt, IT project lead for SAP architecture, technology, and solutions at TE Connectivity explains: “With such a solution, we wanted to streamline internal processes, save unnecessary typing, and cut out potential sources of error in invoice entry and data synchronization.” The product that was chosen is a combined solution from SAP gold partner FIS GmbH, comprising the FCI document reader and the FIS/edc Workflow, which is completely integrated in SAP and which can be used to automatically process and approve invoices and other documents.

First previewed in May, the SAP HANA application cloud is now officially here. (photo: Frank Voelkel)
This past week, most tech web sites and blogs have been captivated by all things Siri – what happens if you ask her about the meaning the life; and somewhat less high-minded, does she swear? Well, at SAP.info, we have been preoccupied with another technology, which coincidentally is also called by a 4-letter-long female name. You guessed it: HANA.
Since SAPPHIRE NOW in May, SAP has been making steady progress along its roadmap for SAP In-Memory Appliance (SAP HANA) software. The in-memory computing technology became generally available as planned at the end of June, and with the announcement in September of two new real-time applications, SAP took the first step toward its stated goal of enabling new and existing applications to run on SAP HANA.
Previewed at SAP TechEd in Las Vegas, SAP Smart Meter Analytics and SAP CO-PA Accelerator Software were developed specifically to take advantage the SAP HANA platform to deliver real-time analytics on large volumes of data for utility companies and finance companies, respectively.
Then, at the Annual Congress of the German-speaking SAP User Group in Leipzig last week, SAP co-CEO Jim Snabe confirmed that in the future SAP Business One will run on SAP HANA. Since over 80% of SAP’s customers are small and medium businesses, this integration plays a vital role in ensuring that all SAP customers – not just large enterprises – will benefit from in-memory technology and real-time analytics. For coverage of the event and more details on the future offering, read the SAP.info article, “In the Pipeline: SAP HANA for SMBs.”
