We’ve already seen a fair amount of rumors regarding a smaller iPad (our own sources pointed to Apple buying 7-inch screens), but now Apple’s biggest fan John Gruber is saying the company is testing smaller 7.85-inch iPads in its labs.
Speaking on The Talk Show podcast, the Daring Fireball writer said that the smaller iPad being tested runs the same 1024-by-768 resolution of the iPad 1 and iPad 2, which means apps should run just fine without any tweaking. “I’ve heard from multiple people that this is something that they’re kind of noodling with,” Gruber said.
He went on to clarify it’s unclear if this small iPad will ever hit the market. It’s well-known that Apple likes to test all sorts of far-fetched products in its labs, most of which never get released. But as far as crazy Apple rumors go, I wouldn’t count out a smaller iPad. Such a device would be cheaper than the current iPad (likely even cheaper than the $400 iPad 2) and far more portable.
Most importantly, a smaller iPad could make sure Apple doesn’t lose too much ground to the cheaper $200 Kindle Fire, which has a 7-inch screen and remains the only Android tablet to take off with consumers.

On Wednesday, the rumor mill cranked out a most curious chunk of speculation. According to those in the know, PayPal is working on a new mobile payment device to challenge the likes of Square and Intuit – makers of the two most dominant dongles in the mobile payments space today.
Sources familiar with PayPal’s plans tell Gigaom that PayPal’s dongle will likely be triangle shaped and will “allow small business owners to process credit card swipes from a smartphone, similar to Square, Intuit’s GoPayment and Verifone’s PAYware.”
With more than 100 million active users across 190 countries, PayPal’s reach is vast and diverse. A dongle unique to the platform could be an instant success capable of rivaling – or breezing past – other players in the space almost immediately.
So… is this a rumor or a pending reality? We’ll find out Thursday at the company’s San Francisco event.

Samsung celebrating 300 million phones shipped in 2011
Imagine you’re a Samsung executive. You’ve just emerged from yet another Consumer Electronics Show, where your products and press conference were among the hottest tickets at an otherwise dull affair. Your televisions and phones have consumers drooling — hell, even your home appliances are popular.
What better way to top off all of your success than to buy the struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion?
If you think that sounds crazy, I’m right there with you. Samsung is reportedly the front runner in negotiations to acquire RIM, seemingly despite all good sense, according to the mobile site Boy Genius Report.
BGR’s Jonathan Geller writes:
We have heard that [RIM co-CEO] Jim Balsillie is actively meeting with almost every company that might be interested in either a part or all of RIM, in addition to having talks about licensing. “Jim is going hard after Samsung,” said a source with knowledge of the negotiations.
The “trusted source” tells the site that RIM is meeting with “almost every” company that may be interested in purchasing the company, a part of it, or merely striking a licensing deal for its software. RIM may have trouble finding a buyer because its co-CEOs are pricing the company around $12 billion to $15 billion, well past its $8.5 billion market cap, the sources say.
I’m just hoping this is a tall tale meant to raise RIM’s profile in the eyes of investors (its stock rose around 9 percent to a high of $17.93 today), because Samsung doesn’t really have much to gain by snapping up RIM. BGR notes that the Korean computer company may be interested in RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger, or in having another operating system to further distance itself from Google, but those aren’t reason enough to pay top dollar for a sinking ship.
During RIM’s third quarter earnings call last month, the company announced that its long-awaited BlackBerry 10 devices won’t be available until the end of 2012. That news came directly on the heels of poor BlackBerry PlayBook sales and yet another major revenue drop. All the while, RIM’s co-CEOs, Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, sounded inexplicably elated and out of touch with the company’s problems.
Platforms die. Consumers move on. Samsung doesn’t have much reason to tie itself down with RIM when it’s doing a fine job of dominating the market on its own.

According to published reports in the far east on Thursday, Apple’s third-generation iPad may be released soon after the start of the new year.
DigiTimes reveals that Apple’s current plans for the iPad 2 call for the tablet to be reduced in price following the launch of the iPad 3. This will give Apple a leg up on the competition in the entry-level tablet PC market.
The report says the greatest evidence to suggest a looming iPad 3 arrival comes from the fact that iPad 2 production has been dramatically reduced in recent weeks.
“Sources from Apple’s supply chain,” DigiTimes reports, “have pointed out that Apple’s orders for iPad 2 are dropping gradually, while orders for the new devices remain steady.”
As for whether the drops in orders could mean that Apple is actually planning to phase out iPad 2, the sources noted it is still too early to tell, and more observations need to be done in 2012 before the picture becomes clearer.
Although there remains talk of Apple possibly ending iPad 2 production after the iPad 3 hits the market, most industry analysts believe Apple will keep the iPad 2 around as a means to keep the Amazon Kindle Fire’s market share as small as possible.

In early December, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued a network access permit for Apple to introduce the iPhone 4S into the world’s most populous mobile market.
Ostensibly, the permit was the last hurdle for Apple to jump before it could legally sell the iPhone 4S in China.
Within hours of the permit being granted, China Unicom said that it expected to launch the device by the end of December. But on Tuesday, China’s People’s Daily reported that Apple has, indeed, met all of the compulsory requirements to launch the smartphone in mainland China. And a new estimated launch date has been proposed.
The iPhone 4S is expected to reach the Chinese market before the Chinese New Year, which starts Monday, January 23, 2012.
Despite what may appear to have been a long, drawn-out process to get the iPhone 4S into China, if the January 23rd launch date happens, it will be the fastest time Apple has managed to get one of its new devices into the Chinese market.

In an interview with the Business Insider during the IGNITION Conference last week, the CMO for Rovio — maker of the ubiquitous Angry Birds mobile app — said his company is now the world’s largest mobile ad publisher, even bigger than Google which runs ads on all its mobile apps and mobile search results.
Like us, many have questioned whether this is even viable and have actually asked Google straight up. Though the company wouldn’t officially comment, “multiple sources close to Google” said that Rovio is in fact the largest display ad publisher, but they were skeptical Rovio beat Google’s mobile search ad impressions. Rovio’s Chief Marketing Officer Peter Vesterbacka said his company now serves over 10 billion mobile ad impressions each and every month.
When considering the insane numbers Rovio has divulged in relation to Angry Bird downloads — which now tops more than 500 million times in one form or another — it’s safe to say that its claims may actually be true, or will be soon enough. What’s interesting is what Rovio has planned for its massive mobile reach in terms of mobile advertising. Vesterbacka said the company plans to build a “whole new form of advertising from the ground up.” As an example, he mentioned a recent campaign they created called ”Angry Birds Rio,” which was built as a promotion for the 20th Century Fox film Rio. It was an advertisement that actually costs gamers a dollar, and users were willing to pay it in droves.
Though the company is tight lipped on exactly what it has planned, it should be interesting to see what they have in mind. Vesterbacka said the company plans to “start 2012 off with a bang,” so we’ll have to see whether mobile advertising is a big part of that or not. For more info on where Rovio is headed, it’s investment plans and more, check out this interview between Vesterbacka and the Business Insider posted earlier today.

The rumored Facebook phone is real and will be manufactured by HTC under the codename “Buffy,” anonymous sources have told AllThingsD.
Although the news site doesn’t indicate where its information comes from, it must have more to report, because this is the first of what AllThingsD says will be a week-long series on the mysterious device. The so-called “Facebook phone” has been at the heart of rampant speculation for more than two years, although the only devices to emerge so far have been fairly standard Android or feature phones with Facebook features slapped on.
“Buffy,” if real, is named after the famous vampire slayer featured in a movie and a long-running television series.
The Buffy phone will run a heavily modified version of Android featuring support for apps developed in HTML5, and could see the light of day in a year to 18 months, according to writers Liz Gannes and Ina Fried.
AllThingsD quoted a Facebook spokesperson who declined to comment directly on the phone, but said:
Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.
This jibes with Facebook’s overall strategy of putting social features at the heart of an experience, as opposed to layering them on later.
Facebook is the single most popular app in the iTunes App Store, and the social networking giant has more than 350 million mobile users across all platforms.
